Through the generosity of members, guests, and corporate sponsors, Friends of Downtown has awarded more than $400,000 in scholarships to students of San Diego City College. Friends of Downtown began awarding scholarships in 2000 and has grown to be the largest contributor of single scholarships each year. In 2015, the organization began extending their reach by offering both honors and traditional scholarships. Each student that applies is evaluated on their academic performance and interview with the group’s scholarship panel.
In 2015, Friends of Downtown raised more than $18,000 in donations. These funds were used to provide students in the 2016 academic year financial support that will allow them to continue to achieve their goals. It was with great pleasure that 41 students were awarded scholarships as a result of the generosity from the 2015 scholarship breakfast.

Scholarship Recipient Quotes:
“With this scholarship in my hand, most might think that I just received money, but for me, what I have gotten is an opportunity; an opportunity to reach my last step to achieve my goals and dreams, an encouragement to do my best in life, and a belief that someone other than myself and family believes in me to be successful in life.” - Nicole, 21, nursing major
“I want to thank Friends of Downtown for the opportunity you have given me and for allowing me to go forward with my education. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I know that someday, I too, will give back to my community and make a difference in one’s life just like you have made a difference in my life. Thank you!.” - Emmanuel, 21, criminal justice major
